The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, on Thursday, said that 126 Nigerians across 14 states of Nigeria were jailed between January and February 2021.
NDLEA Director, Media and Advocacy, Mr Femi Babafemi, stated that one of the convicts, Musa Ibrahim, who was prosecuted for trafficking 40kg of Cannabis Sativa in Akure, Ondo State, was sentenced to 16 years and eight months i by a Federal High Court in the state capital.
He also said that Ibrahim Haladu bagged 15 years after he was found guilty of trafficking 6.7kg of the same drug in Bauchi State.
Babafemi stated, “Also in Bauchi, Haruna Aliyu was convicted and sentenced to five years for trafficking 609kg of Cannabis. Justice Hassan Dikko of the Federal High Court, Bauchi, convicted both Aliya and Haladu.
“In Jos, Plateau State, Eke Chibuike was convicted and sentenced to five years for trafficking Tramadol and Diazepam, while Idan Kenneth charged for unlawful possession of 220g of Cannabis Sativa, 4.3g of Tramadol and 3.3g of Rophynol was convicted on all three charges and sentenced to two years each.”
According to him, a breakdown of the conviction records across some other states in February shows that 18 persons were sent to jail in Kano.
He added that Imo and Abia recorded five convictions apiece, while Gombe recorded four.
Meanwhile the Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Gen. Muhammad Marwa (rtd.), in the statement, commended the agency’s Directorate of Prosecution and Legal Services for the diligent prosecution of the cases.
He charged them to do more, so that such convictions would serve as deterrent to those who may want to go into illicit drug business.
