Army chief, others die in plane crash

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt General Ibrahim Attahiru, has been reportedly killed in an air crash today, Friday, May 21, while on an official trip to Kaduna. 

Financial Street gathered that he “died with his aides,” with some sources pegging the number of casualties at between eight and 12.

A report said the accident involved a military training aircraft that crashed at the runway of Kaduna International Airport.

“The plane was said to have crash-landed on the runway, with the eight people on board feared dead,” the report said.

The Nigerian Air Force confirmed the incident via a statement issued shortly after the crash.

NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, said the incident occurred near the Kaduna International Airport.

“An air crash involving a @NigAirForce aircraft occurred this evening near the Kaduna International Airport. The immediate cause of the crash is still being ascertained. More details to follow soon,” he said.

The incident was said to have occurred at about 6 p.m. while it was raining heavily.
