Toyota leads as auto firms recall over 13m vehicles globally

Led by Toyota, automobile companies have recalled approximately 13,362,759 vehicles globally in the first half of 2020 due to safety concerns.

Toyota recalled about 3.95m, followed by Ford at 2.9m. Volvo recalled 2.8m while Fiat Chrysler recalled 1.74m. Honda took back 1.4m, according to a research carried out by Finbold.com.

KIA’s 244,000 recalls places it in the sixth spot, followed by Hyundai at 207,000. Nissan had 49,225 while Mazda recalled 24,000.

Germany’s Volkswagen recalled 16,098 while America’s electric vehicle manufacturer, Tesla, recalled 15,000. Bentley recalled 6,000 vehicles. BMW and McLaren had one of the least recalls at 3,800 and 2,763 respectively.

The research acknowledges the impact of the current crisis on the vehicle recalls.

“The over 13m vehicle recalls were done mostly during the coronavirus pandemic, a period when social distancing was being advocated to contain the health crisis. At the same time, some manufacturers had scaled down their operations due to the economic impact of the pandemic. This factor might affect the timeframe when these vehicles are returned to owners,” the report stated.

The Finbold.com research also reviewed the leading auto and truck manufacturers worldwide in sales revenue. Toyota occupies the top spot at $280.5bn followed by Volkswagen ($275.2bn), Daimler ($189.2bn), Ford ($149.9bn) and Honda ($142.4bn).

In the sixth spot, General Motors recorded $137.2bn followed by China-based SAIC Motor at $121.1bn.

United Kingdom-based Fiat Chrysler registered $121.1bn while BMW had $116.6bn. From the list of overviewed vehicle manufacturers, Nissan had the least revenue at $96.3bn.
