Finance minister targets massive revenue generation

The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, has identified diverse revenue generation as key to economic growth.

The minister made this known during a brief welcome ceremony held at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.

“President Muhammadu Buhari has just doubled our assignment, and this came as a result of our commitment and successes recorded in the past, which we intend to improve on through higher revenue generation and policies,” she said.

“That we have been re-merged with the ministry of budget and national planning is also a very weighty responsibility. Our nation is facing fiscal crisis, so it is up to us to make sure that it is arrested, so we don’t slip into a crisis. We have been growing in eight consecutive quarters, but it is a growth that is still fragile,” Ahmed said.

The minister added, “Our revenues have grown, but we are still at 55 per cent of what we projected. We still have to pay salaries, statutory allocations, debt and operate on a daily basis for the success of our economy.”

The minister assured that she would create a good working synergy with the ministry for budget and national planning, to identify existing gaps and correct them for effective performance.

Ahmed was minister of state for budget and national planning before taking over as finance minister, following the resignation of Kemi Adeosun.
