Merck Foundation widens horizon for young doctors

Merck Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Merck KGaA Germany, has announced it is giving scholarship opportunities to doctors across Africa to commemorate World Health Day, 2021.

The gesture by the organisation, Financial Street learnt, is in collaboration with 19 African First Ladies and Ministers of Health.

The scholarship for the African doctors is targeted towards under-served specialties like Emergency and Resuscitation Medicine, Gastro-enterology, Laparoscopic Surgical Skills, Mental Health and Psychological Therapies. Others are Orthopedic Trauma Science, Dermatology, Neonatal Medicine, Pain Management, Psychiatry, Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Disease, Ophthalmology, Internal Medicine, Neuroimaging For Research, Urology, Trauma and Orthopedics.

According to the Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Rasha Kelej, “Building professional healthcare is the best strategy to improve access to quality and equitable healthcare solutions for patients in under-served communities.”

The Foundation has provided for over 1,100 doctors from 42 countries across Africa, Asia and Latin America.
