Nigeria generated 33,448,633MWh of electricity in 2019 -NBS

A total of 33,448,633 megawatt-hours of energy was generated by Nigeria’s power stations in 2019, the National Bureau of Statistics said in a recently released data, ‘Power Sector Report: Energy Generated and Sent Out and Consumed and Load Allocation.’

According to the NBS, privatised power companies generated 19,692,683MWh, independent power projects generated 7,798,253MWh while the Nigerian National Integrated Power Project generated 5,957,697MWh.

This power generation statistics for 2019 reflected that the Egbin power plant recorded the highest energy generation with 3,786,313MWh accounting for 11.32 per cent in the reviewed year.

Alaoji NIPP generated 209,453MWh which accounted for 0.63 per cent to record the lowest of total energy generated in 2019.

The total energy sent out by GenCos stood in 2019 at 32,799,114MWh.

According to the report, privatised GenCos sent out 19,233,151MWh, IPP GenCos sent out 7,648,700MWh while the NIPP GenCos sent out 5,917,262MWh.

Energy consumed by the country’s 11 electricity distribution companies in 2019 stood at 28,026,503MWh with Ikeja DisCo recording the highest energy consumption with 4,087,971 MWh accounting for 14.95 per cent.

While Yola Disco recorded the lowest energy consumption with 1,122,534MWh, the figure accounted for four per cent of total energy consumed in 2019.

On cross-border electricity transactions, the data showed that the country supplied Benin and the Niger Republic a total of 1,278,344MWh and 1,048,807MWh of electricity, respectively.
