Rainy season: Lagos plans safety on waterways

To ensure safety of lives on waterways, the Lagos State Waterways Authority, on Thursday, gave out 400 life jackets to pupils and boat operators in different parts of the state. The areas include Ebute-Ero, Sabokoji, Liverpool, Temidire, and Coconut jetties in CMS and Apapa.

The  Managing Director of LASWA, Mr Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, noted that the gesture wsa part of government’s effort to ensure adequate safety of all waterways users, especially during the rainy season.

Emmanuel said that since Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu became the governor, Lagos had witnessed reduced cases of boat mishaps on the waterways.

“This success story is due to the massive investment the current administration puts into the waterways sub-sector, especially in safety improvement and awareness.”

The LASWA boss, however, warned boat operators to always drive with caution and ensure all passengers put on their life jackets before boarding. Even as he implored them to also check the weather condition before sailing.

Emmanuel added that the Lagos government was committed towards ensuring viable, peaceful and safe waterways in the state.
