Few days after President Muhammadu Buhari inaugurated the Deep Blue Project championed by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, the Shippers Association of Lagos State has canvassed the need for the sustainability of the project.
The President of SALS, Jonathan Nicol, disclosed this to Financial Street on Monday in Lagos.
Nicol said the government had invested so much in the project and should, therefore, ensure its sustainability.
According to him, with the launch of the project, the president had demonstrated Nigeria’s readiness to fight piracy on its waters and the Gulf of Guinea.
Nicol added that assets would strongly safeguard the country’s maritime space, even as he said that the inauguration of the assets was overdue.
“We know that in shipping trade, we need to protect not only the vessels but also the commodity carried, with the humans involved; so, the first mandatory requirement is that there must be free flow of traffic on our high sea.
“We commend the government and thank God for giving the government the political will for thinking about (the project) and implementing it,” he said.
