SON destroys N2m substandard goods in Niger

In the bid to safeguard the public health, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria says it destroyed expired and substandard products worth N2m in Niger State.

The State Coordinator, SON, Hauwa Nuhu, stated this on Tuesday during the destruction of the goods in Minna.

“The products before you have been marked for destruction, because after we carried out our laboratory tests, we found out that they were expired or substandard,” she told newsmen.

Nuhu also said the seized “goods are estimated to be N2m, going by their current market value.” .

She reiterated that the products were not safe for consumption or use.

The goods included canned foods, cosmetics, used (tokunbo) tyres, beverages and fruit juice among others, the SON official explained.

Nuhu added that instead of burning the products using used tyres, thus polluting the environment and creating environmental hazard, they were taken to recycling plants to produce other things.
