Workers’ Day celebration: MWUN makes case for seafarers’ welfare

As a way to celebrate workers all over the nation, the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria has called on the Federal Government to pay retired seafarers who laboured aboard the defunct Nigerian National Shipping Line their pensions and other outstanding benefits.

The president-general, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, made the plea on Saturday as part of the May 1st Workers’ Day celebration message in Abuja.

Adeyanju urged the government to upgrade the training standard of Nigerian seafarers, pointing out that seamen deserved the best enlightenment and  education to compete favourably with their foreign counterparts.

The MWUN boss noted that the retired seafarers served the country diligently, hence government should give them all the necessary support in return.

He also advocated that the sailors’ monthly pension be paid, saying it was long overdue.
Adeyanju further lamented that most of the pensioners lived in abject penury.
“I am using this opportunity to call on the leaders from both the senior and junior unions in the maritime sector to work in harmony in the protection of workers’ welfare and negotiation,” he said.
