Africa CDC unsure of second COVID-19 vaccine

Head of Africa Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, John Nkengasong, has said it is unpredictable when the second dose of the Coronavirus Disease vaccine will come.

Africa CDC reports that Africa is the least vaccinated continent, with less than 14 million out of 1.3 billion people administered doses.

Ghana is almost exhausting its shots with 742,000 doses administered already out of 815,000 possible shots, and Nkengasong said, “Even if Ghana had the money, they will not know where to go get the vaccine, that’s the challenge.”

A deal between the African Union and Johnson & Johnson has been signed, but doses are expected to come in the third quarter.

According to Nkengasong, people who have received their first jab are already benefitting from some protection from the virus.

“Nations should use their doses before they expire,” he said.
