Customs generates N700m in two weeks

The Nigeria Customs Service says its’ strike force’ unit has generated N708m in the last two weeks.

Speaking to journalists in Lagos, the Zone A strike force coordinator, Deputy Comptroller Ahmed Bello Shaibu, said the Comptroller General of Customs, Col. Hammed Ali (retd) also directed the unit to invade markets and warehouses in the South-West for smuggled rice and other contrabands.

With 1,930 bags of smuggled rice seized in Lagos and Ogun states, the coordinator said the directive was to boost rice’s local production in Nigeria.

He said, “(We seized) 1,930 bags of 50kg of foreign parboiled rice in two weeks. This is to ensure that the country is rid of smuggled foreign parboiled rice as we have instructions of the Comptroller General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali (retd), that markets and warehouses of smugglers should be raided and smuggled rice evacuated.”
