Energy industry leaders to debate natural gas vs renewable energy

Is natural gas or renewable energy the better option for navigating Africa through the energy transition? A growing population coupled with economic growth and industrialisation mean energy demand on the continent is forecast to grow rapidly in the coming years.

With massive gas projects underway in countries including Egypt and Mozambique, and costs of key renewable technologies falling, policymakers are now faced with a range of options to secure Africa’s energy future.

Senior industry leaders, hand-chosen for the breadth and depth of their expertise on both sides of the argument, will be going head-to-head at AOW Virtual to debate these points and share their views on the energy transition, both in Africa and globally.

The live audience will be invited to engage with the debaters directly using question-and-answer and polling technology.

Speakers taking to the stage are Steven Winberg, Assistant Secretary of Fossil Energy, United States Department of Energy; Omar Mithá, Special Economic Adviser to Filipe Nyusi, President of Mozambique; Tony Attah, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Nigeria LNG; Andrew Herscowitz, Chief Development Officer, International Development Finance Corporation; Luc Koechlin, Managing Director, Head of Southern Africa, EDF; and Liv Hovem, Chief Executive Officer, DNV GL.
