Huawei wins big at NTITA Awards

Huawei Technologies Company Nigeria Limited has won three major awards at the recently-concluded ‘2020 Nigeria Tech Innovation & Telecom Awards’, renowned as the most esteemed accolade in Nigeria’s information and communications technology space.

The company was honoured with the ‘Excellence in ICT and Cybersecurity Development in Nigeria’, ‘Excellence in Technological Innovation’ and ‘Network Infrastructure Provider of the Year’ awards.

According to the organisers, in a statement to Financial Street, Huawei was selected for its outstanding contribution to the Nigerian ICT sector in providing quality and secure infrastructure as well as for its constant improvement in technology innovation that aids the bridging of digital divide across Nigeria.

While receiving the award for Huawei, Nihilola Fafore, the company’s representative, stated that Huawei has remained committed to delivering secure, quality, affordable and accessible ICT services in Nigeria for more than 20 years and that the company is still committed to do more for the country.

She also expressed gratitude to NTITA and the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria for recognising Huawei’s significant contribution in Nigeria.

Other winners were Dr. Isa Ali Pantami, the honourable minister of communications and digital economy, ‘Digital Leader of the Year’; Prof. Umaru Garba Danbatta, executive vice chairman/chief executive officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission, ‘Broadband Oxygenator of the Year’; Hajiya Asmau Inuwa Yahaya, first lady, Gombe State, ‘ICT First Lady of the Year’.

Dr. Abimbola Alale, chief executive officer, NIGCOMSAT, won the ‘Public Sector ICT Woman of the Year’ while Dr. Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, director-general of NITDA, won ‘Public Sector ICT CEO of the Year’.

Also named winners were NITDA, ‘Excellence in IT Regulation Award’; Mr. Ike Nnamani, Medallion’s CEO, ‘Special Recognition to the Telecom Sector’; Airtel, ‘Customer Experience Award’; IHS, ‘Telecom Infrastructure Provider of the Year’; Department of Petroleum, ‘Best of Technology in driving Efficiency’ and Galaxy Backbone, ‘Public Sector Connectivity Services Provider of the year’, among others.

Speaking about the initiative, ATCON’s President, Mr. Olusola Teniola, stated that the annual NTITA Awards has in a short period become a notable forum where players in the highly competitive telecoms industry are commended for their outstanding contribution to the industry while also bringing government’s attention to areas that require intervention.

NTITA, organised by InstinctWave and ATCON, is a platform to celebrate the continued growth and success of the ICT marketplace and focus on the exceptional and innovative performers within the industry.

The organisers further stated that the fourth edition of the NTITA Awards was focused on honouring and celebrating organisations and individuals at the forefront of innovation in the Nigeria’s ICT industry.

Also, the event was held in Abuja this year to commemorate the National Independence and recognise all efforts towards curbing the Covid-19 pandemic.

Commenting, the CEO of InstinctWave, Mr. Akin Naphtal, said, “This year’s edition will be especially memorable because Nigeria will be celebrating 60 years of independence…NTITA traditionally takes place in Lagos but in the spirit of the Independence Day celebration of our dear country, [the company decided to move] the event to the country’s capital, FCT Abuja. [The event also aimed at recognising] the efforts of the different organizations and government institutions in mitigating the challenges posed by the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country.”
