Lai Mohammed, others to engage Twitter over suspension

Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari, has appointed the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, to chair the team that will engage Twitter over the recent suspension of operations of the microblogging and social networking service in the country.

Mohammed announced the approval in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday.

The Federal Government’s team also comprises the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, his counterparts in the ministries of Communications and Digital Economy, Foreign Affairs, Works and Housing, State for Labour and Employment, as well as other relevant government agencies.

Following the indefinite suspension of its operations for activities deemed capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence, Twitter wrote to President Buhari seeking ddialogue, with a view to charting a path forward.

Recall that the Federal Government had placed a ban on Twitter from Nigeria following issues bordering on genocidal statement pulled down by the social media giant.

On June 5, the government announced it was suspending Twitter’s operations in the country.

Mobile phone networks blocked access after being ordered to do so, but some users are getting around the ban.

The move comes after Twitter deleted a tweet by Buhari for breaching the site’s rules.
