Nigeria to begin rail transport of petroleum products

Nigeria will soon be moving petroleum products through rail lines to save cost.

Disclosing the plan to newsmen on Monday, the Executive Secretary, Petroleum Equalisation Fund, Ahmed Bobboi, said petroleum marketers needed a cheaper and convenient way to transport the product.

“We are also looking at the possibility of petroleum marketers transporting their products by rail because the government is providing rail lines across the country.

“If marketers patronise the railway system, it will increase the volume of petroleum products being transported because one rail journey will take 20 or more cargoes of the product,” the PEF scribe said.

According to him, the plan will save costs and reduce pressure on the country’s roads.

He said, “Most state governments are complaining that heavy duty vehicles have destroyed the roads. I think it will reduce the cost of road maintenance for the government.”

Bobboi hinted that PEF would continue to ensure uniform pump price of petroleum products across the states.

“It is the same approach that PEF adopts in equalising petroleum products, especially Premium Motor Spirit, Low Pour Fuel Oil, Dual Purpose Kerosene and Automotive Gas Oil popularly known as diesel,” Bobboi added.
