NIHOTOUR advocates women empowerment via vocational training

The National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism has advocated vocational training programmes that will empower women, particularly the vulnerable in the society, to make them self-sustaining.

The Director-General of NIHOTOUR, Alhaji Nura Kangiwa, disclosed this when officials of the Federal Capital Territory chapter of the International Federation of Women Lawyers, led by the Chairperson, Mrs Rekia Adejo-Andrew, visited him at the headquarters of the institute in Abuja.

According to a statement by NIHOTOUR’s Director of Media and Public Relations, Mr Ahmed Sule, the DG said empowering vulnerable women in the society with the requisite skills was the only sure way to protect them against survival risks and make them independent.

NIHOTOUR, as a training institute, is willing to partner with FIDA to train the women under the vision and mission of the federation in providing succour and healthy living for vulnerable women in the society, especially in travel tourism and hospitality trades.

Kangiwa expressed delight with the visit and the work the federation was doing to lift the poor, voiceless and vulnerable segment of women in the country.

He noted that Nigeria needed more of such enviable social and non-governmental organisations to augment government’s efforts at providing better living conditions for the populace.

Earlier in her address, Mrs Adejo-Andrew said they were at NIHOTOUR to congratulate the DG on his appointment and to identify with his visionary leadership and philanthropic qualities that endeared him to many in the country, including FIDA, so that the society could be a better place for all, especially the vulnerable.

She said the numerous activities of FIDA, which include the enhancement, promotion, protection, and preservation of the rights and welfare of women and children in the society through empowerment, require the support and assistance of public-spirited individuals and organisations in the likes of Kangiwa and NIHOTOUR, adding that FIDA was at the institute’s head office to solicit that support and collaboration.
