SON moves to rid Nigerian markets of fake products

Standards Organisation of Nigeria has expressed commitment to ridding the country of substandard goods, so that consumers can get value for their money.

After sanctioning a popular building materials dealer in Jalingo, Taraba State, on Thursday, the Chief Standards Engineer of SON, Olumide Alade, who led the operation, said the organisation would not sit back and watch substandard products take over Nigerian markets.

Alade, who said they stormed the state following a tip-off on massive presence of substandard building materials, disclosed that consumers had been bombarding the agency with complaints on the low quality of goods in “our markets”.

Stressing how SON had being working on tip-off, he said the purpose of the operations was to identify the locations and put the products on hold, pending the conclusion of investigations.

“There have been influx of substandard building materials that are distributed in Nigerian markets,” he lamented.

He added that the Director-General of SON, Farouk Salim, who was uncomfortable with the situation, approved the raid on some investigated locations.

SON called on Tarabans and Nigerians at large not to shield dealers on substandard products, and urged them to always provide information that would assist in tracking down defaulters.

The exercise, which lasted about an hour, culminated in the sealing of all the departments of business.
